Prof. Kleinschnitz hat sich vor allem als ausgewiesener Schlaganfall-Experte einen immensen Ruf erworben. Als Leiter der ältesten deutschen „Stroke Unit“ weiß der erfahrene Neurologe, dass bei einem Schlaganfall jede Minute zählt – und gilt auch in der fächerübergreifenden Zusammenarbeit als absoluter Vorreiter.

Über Prof. Dr. med. Christoph Kleinschnitz

Christoph Kleinschnitz studierte Medizin an der Universität Würzburg (1994 bis 2000). Nach seiner Promotion (2001) arbeitete er mehrere Jahre an der Neurologischen Universitätsklinik Würzburg und qualifizierte sich 2007 als neurologischer Facharzt. 2009 übernahm er dort die Leitung der Stroke Unit und der Ambulanz, in der Schlaganfälle und Erkrankungen hirnversorgender Gefäße behandelt werden. Ab 2010 leitete er zudem die Klinische Forschungsgruppe für MS und Neuroimmunologie. Bevor er ans UK Essen kam, war er Professor und geschäftsführender Oberarzt an der Uniklinik Würzburg. Seine wegweisende Arbeit wurde mehrfach ausgezeichnet.

Einen Schlaganfall erleiden in Deutschland etwa 270.000 Menschen pro Jahr, etwa 2.500 MS-Diagnosen werden jedes Jahr neu gestellt. Bei Schlaganfall und MS sind die Immunzellen (T-Helferzellen) gestört, die den Körper eigentlich dabei unterstützen sollten, Krankheitserreger zu erkennen. Prof. Kleinschnitz: „Wenn das Immunsystem aber fehlgesteuert ist, wie bei MS und Schlaganfall, greift sich der Körper selbst an bis hin zum Absterben von Nervenzellen, Lähmungen oder auch Sprachstörungen.“

Eine große Rolle spielen zum Beispiel Blutplättchen (Thrombozyten): Im gesunden Körper helfen sie Blutungen zu stoppen und Wunden zu heilen. Bei einem Schlaganfall sind sie Teil des Blutgerinnsels und verstopfen das Blutgefäß. Ähnlich sieht es bei MS aus. Prof. Kleinschnitz: „Unsere Forschungen zeigen aber auch, dass die Erkrankungen natürlich wesentlich komplexer sind und sich nicht allein mit der Aktivität des Immunsystems erklären lassen.“ Blutgerinnungsfaktoren spielen ebenfalls eine Rolle bei den entzündlichen Prozessen im Nervensystem. Am UK Essen sucht er mit seinem Team nach weiteren Gemeinsamkeiten und alternativen Behandlungsansätzen.
